This Government has a culture of cover-ups and a problem with the truth. We see it time and again.
Keir Starmer can’t even answer a basic question at PMQs: ‘Did the Prime Minister speak to Peter Mandelson before appointing him as our man in Washington?’
Now we learn from American media, not our Government, that Iran may have launched a missile attack on the UK’s military base in the Chagos Islands.
The attempted strike on the British Indian Ocean Territory, still British sovereign territory, was reported in the States and confirmed by US officials well before our Government acknowledged it.
It appears the attack came before Starmer finally allowed the US to use our airbases to strike Iranian targets. He spent days attacking me for holding this view, only to adopt it himself.

No recent Prime Minister has taken such a casual approach to Parliament and our traditions as Keir Starmer. Accountability shouldn’t be an optional extra. It’s a core part of our parliamentary democracy.
The war in the Middle East has created economic shockwaves that are buffeting Britain. Unfortunately, our economy is more exposed than many other countries, because of the terrible decisions Rachel Reeves has taken in her Budgets.
We already had flatlining growth, unemployment rising month-after-month, tax hikes fuelling inflation and record borrowing. The Iran conflict is going to make things worse.
This is where truth-telling is important. Anyone looking at Britain’s balance sheet and the threats facing Britain must admit that we are spending far too much on welfare, taxing too much, and spending too little on defence.
Pretending everything is fine as Starmer and Reeves do is not a solution. That’s why we need to take a cold hard look at the national finances and accept that things must change.
That’s the Conservative plan. Cut welfare spending so we can cut tax and invest in defence. That’s the way we can have both a stronger economy and a stronger country.
