The garden in New Palace Yard, outside Westminster Hall, was launched in 2021 by the Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle in partnership with the Royal British Legion.
It gives all 650 MPs from across the UK the opportunity to participate collectively in an Act of Remembrance at the home of Parliamentary democracy.
Mrs Badenoch laid a cross to honour all those who served our country, such as William Gilbey of Saffron Walden, one of the first local casualties of the First World War. Gilbey joined the Royal Navy at fifteen and after over a decade of service was killed aged 27 when H.M.S. Pathfinder was sunk by a German submarine in September 1914.
Mrs Badenoch said,
“It is always a privilege to visit the Garden of Remembrance and to lay a cross on behalf of North West Essex. Each cross represents the collective sacrifice of an entire community - those who served, those who never returned, and the families who bore their loss.
“This act of remembrance is a moment to reflect on the courage and duty that bind our country together and to renew our commitment to the values they fought to defend.”
