Local MP and Leader of the Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has forced the government into a U-turn that will protect children across the North West Essex constituency from the harms of social media.
Three times Labour MPs voted against Conservative proposals to ban social media for under-16s, but today [15 June 2026] Keir Starmer has U-turned and back the Conservatives plans.
Commenting, Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP said:
“The Government has finally woken up to the dangers of social media for young people and have now backed Conservative plans for a social media ban for under-16s.
“This is an important step in helping parents protect childhood for children. Hundreds of parents across North West Essex have written in support of the ban and will welcome this announcement too.
“The Conservative Party has been relentlessly fighting for this and will continue to work for the best implementation of the policy.”
